Today, we honour and remember the Indigenous women, girls, gender-diverse, and 2-Spirit people who continue to go missing and are murdered at an alarming and disproportionate rate. Marine monitoring has become a new form of protection in the face of increased TMX tanker traffic, which has risen from four ships per month to over 30, as well as other vessels crossing our territorial waters. These waters carry more than tankers and ships; they hold the safety of our communities. By monitoring these waters, we help safeguard our lands and people—especially women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. On this National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Gender Diverse People (MMIWG2S+), we highlight the connection between protecting our waters and protecting our people and communities. #SistersInSpirit #MMIWG2S
